19 July 2025Painters Link Group have built a pretty good name when it comes to heritage and historic building painting in Sydney.
Heritage Paint Restoration, Done with Heart, Craft & Deep Respect for History
Painters Link Group have built a name for themselves as the go-to team for heritage painters in Sydney, with a special emphasis on historic building painting, restoration, and preservation across the city and its surrounding suburbs.
Heritage Paint Restoration, done with heart, craft & a deep respect for history
Restoring old buildings is pretty special, breathing new life into an old place can be a real thrill. You hear the creaks of the floorboards, the worn patches on the walls - every little thing tells a story about what that old place has been through. Sydney is a pretty amazing city, with all its stunning heritage buildings, homes, old churches and historic buildings scattered around the suburbs. We're at Painters Link proud to call this place home, with all its character-filled old places like Balmain, Parramatta, Newtown, Surry Hills, Glebe, Strathfield and Paddington.
At Painters Link Group® we're seen as trusted heritage painters in Sydney because we genuinely get that old buildings need more than just a standard paint job. We're pretty chuffed to have been chosen to look after some of Sydney's most character-filled homes and historic properties.
Heritage Painters Who Know Sydney Like the Back of Their Hand
We've built a solid rep for heritage and historic building painting in Sydney and take our responsibility to restore these amazing old buildings dead seriously. Our painters aren't just qualified tradespeople with a brush - they're actual enthusiasts who have a deep respect for the craftsmanship, materials and construction methods that were used all those years ago.
If it's restoring an old homestead in Parramatta, or repainting a weatherboard terrace in Balmain, or even bringing an Art Deco home in Newtown back to life, our heritage painters bring the patience, experience and attention to detail that heritage projects need to shine.
We at Painters Link® regularly work across the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore and Western Sydney, but we tailor every heritage painting project to the building's age, material and local environment to make sure it's done prfessionally.
More than just paint - saving Sydney's history
Restoring an old building is so more than applying a coat of paint on the walls, it's about having a respectful conversation with the past. It is honouring the building's history and making sure it stays structurally sound and visually authentic for the people who come after us.
As experienced heritage painters in Sydney that homeowners actually trust, we use breathable coatings, compatible primers and proven prep methods that don't hurt old timber, plaster, brickwork or deco details, they actually work with them.

Its this approach that truly sets heritage painting apart from a standard painting job:
Older materials need a bit of breathing room
Heritage colours are those rich, subtle colours that you get from layers of old paint
Plus, you've got restrictions to work with
And then there's the detail work
So if you've got a historic property, you're not going to want to hire just any old painter. You need pros who understand the building's needs, and yours too.
Our Heritage Painting Services
We offer a comprehensive range of professional painting services that are custom tailored for historic and heritage-listed buildings, and we put a lot of thought and care into every job we do, understanding that these buildings deserve a lot of respect and attention to traditional building methods.
Heritage Paint Restoration
We take the time to carefully remove failing or incompatible coatings from these old buildings and then restore the original finishes using products that are in keeping with what would have been used back in the day. We always try to colour-match with original samples or by looking at what was used in the past.
The most of the times, this means using more traditional finishes like limewash, distemper or mineral paints, rather than the usual modern acrylics.
Masonry & Stone Coatings
Older buildings with brickwork and sandstone require special coatings that will let moisture escape when the seasons change - we use those sorts of products that are similar to mineral-based systems that have been designed specifically for heritage masonry, because we know that trapped moisture is a real problem.
Timber Window & Door Restoration
For all those old sash windows, heritage doors, balustrades and turned posts, you need to get the timber fixed before you can paint them, and we do all of that for you - we fix any rot, re-glaze the windows, and hand paint the timber parts so that they look just right.
Lead Paint Testing & Safe Removal
We have to deal with old lead-based paints a lot back in the 1970s and 1980s, and they're still turning up in a lot of older Sydney buildings. Painters Link painters is properly trained in testing, removal, encapsulation and preparation methods so that you can be certain you're safe and compliant.
Surface Prep and Preservation
Preparation work shouldn't be rushed, we go at the pace that's needed, using traditional methods like scraping, sanding, patching and priming (often over multiple visits) so that we get the surface right, no matter how long it takes. This is the key to preserving the materials that have already made it through the years.
Heritage Ceiling Prep & Painting
We have a lot of experience with heritage ceiling painting - whether it's aluminium pressed metal ceilings or decorative plasterwork, and we always make sure to get the details right, preserving and highlighting the original features.
Common Heritage-listed Property Types We Paint
- Victorian terraces in Surry Hills, Glebe & Millers Point - we've had the chance to refresh the paint of many a charming old gem in these areas
- Federation cottages in Ashfield, Summer Hill & Haberfield - a beautiful style that just seems to get better with age
- Californian bungalows in the northern suburbs of Sydney - the perfect combination of relaxed beach vibes & high-quality craftsmanship
- Art Deco apartment buildings in Potts Point & Coogee - a vibrant, glamorous style that's just made for the city
- Sandstone churches & public buildings all over the CBD & Parramatta - we love the grandeur of these old buildings
- Colonial farmhouses right across regional NSW & the Blue Mountains - a great example of how old-school meets rural charm

What Our Clients Say about Our Heritage Painting
"We hired Painters Link Group to give our 1890's cottage in Annandale a bit of a facelift, and they absolutely nailed it. They brought out the old character in the facade, matched the colours spot on, and were super careful with the timber - and to top it off, they helped us get council approval for the colours. We'd highly recommend them."
Heritage painting case study

Case Study 1: Restoring a Vintage Terrace in Newtown
We at Painters Link had the privilege of handling a real gem of a job on a gorgeous old terrace in Newtown a while back. This old beauty had been totally trashed - the new owner was keen to have it restored to its former glory so we got stuck in and started bringing the house back to life. But we knew we had our work cut out for us . It had been through some pretty drastic renovations in the 80s and to make matters worse the lot had been slapped in acrylic paint straight over the sandstone - no care for the original facade whatsoever. The end result was just as youd expect really - bubbly, peeling paint everywhere you looked.
So we started by carefully stripping off years of mismatched paint, layer by layer, using gentle methods that would avoid damaging the actual stone or timber underneath. Once we'd exposed the original colours we colour matched them up through a heritage paint supplier. The front door came out in bold Brunswick green, the fretwork got a classic creamy white and the delicate balcony lacework was transformed so its intricate details shone through beautifully again.
When the job was done the owner said it felt like the house had "come home" again, which was exactly the kind of result we're after with every heritage restoration we take on.

Case Study 2: The Heritage Family Home in Blacktown Needed a Bit of Restoration
Project:
Give the Old Place a New Lease on Life - A Four-Bedroom Home Gets a Fresh Coat of Paint
Location:
Blacktown, Western Sydney
Challenge:
The Smith's had called that house home for over 12 years now and it was showing the signs - the kids' rooms were a mess of scuffs and marks, and the living areas had faded into a dull, tired look. They were getting desperate for a change - a whole new vibe that would make the place feel fresh and exciting again like a brand new home.
We threw some high-quality paint at the problem, Taubmans Endure to be precise, on high-traffic areas like hallways and bedrooms, but something a bit softer for the master bedroom to give it a serene, calm feel. The doors and trims got a nice crisp semi-gloss white job to add a bit of modern zing to the whole mix.
The Result
The Smiths were absolutely thrilled with how it turned out. The kids were chuffed with their fancy new feature walls, and the whole family agreed that the house was basically their dream home all over again. And let's not forget the bonus of a potentially big boost to the property value if they ever do decide to sell in the future.

Case Study 3: Bringing Back Some Old Charm in that Newtown Victorian Terrace
Project:
Doing it Properly - Heritage Interior Painting with the Right Colours
Location:
Newtown, Inner Sydney - you know, the Inner West.
Challenge:
This place had all the makings of a beauty - high ceilings and ornate details to die for, all crying out for a bit of TLC. The owners were keen to get the place looking up to date but at the same time keep hold of the character that made it such a gem.
We got stuck in on the paintwork, first of all we had to fix up the plaster, then carefully rubbed down those beautiful mouldings to get them looking good as new and, finally, we used some low-VOC eco paints to really make the colours and details pop. For the walls, we kept things pretty low-key - soft, muted tones all round, with cream and grey on the trims and ceilings to keep the whole place really on message, like it was meant to be that way from the start.
The Result
The owners were dead chuffed with the finish. They reckoned we'd got the balance just right between old and new - the place still had heaps of character but somehow now it felt fresh and comfy to live in all at the same time
Case study 4: Heritage Window Restoration & Repainting - Marrickville
Location : Marrickville NSW
Service : Heritage Timber Windows restored and repainted
We worked on restoring a heritage timber window with original coloured glass in a classic old place in Marrickville. The thing was in a sorry state, peeling paint all over the place, putty that was on its last legs and timber that was looking all the worse for wear . That put its looks and its longterm durability at risk.
Our approach was simple : preserve what we could rather than chuck it out and replace the whole thing. Our team got in there & carefully stripped off all the old paint that was shot, sorted out a bit of timber damage that had cropped up, re-secured the glazing & slapped new putty round the stained glass panels. Then we gave it a fresh coat of paint using a special heritage-friendly exterior paint that was designed to do the job without messing with the old timber.
Overall Restoration Outcome
The stained glass is looking like new again
The timber has a nice clean, crisp look
Weather resistance and lifespan have been given a real boost
And most importantly, the heritage character of the place has been preserved and enhanced
I'm as the project manager at Painters Link really proud of what we achieved, we're able to bring this old home back to life without having to change any of its original features. It's the great example of how heritage properties can be saved and celebrated with the right people at the helm.
Case Study 5: Heritage Church in Manly
One of our more recent heritage projects was at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Manly, and it was a sobering reminder of the TLC required to keep these old buildings from crumbling. The church has been around since the 1850s and was built out in stages by 1909 in that lovely Gothic style.
The problem is, with 12 metre high arches, delicate ceilings made of vermiculite, and ancient timber planks that are just falling apart, you've got a whole lot of complex issues on your hands. Our crew got to grips with the project by rolling up their sleeves and doing a detailed restoration job including staining those timbers with multiple coats of Cabot's, carefully patching up the textured ceilings after they'd upgraded the lighting, and even rebuilding some of the walls that were water damaged after applying a Granosite system.
Then there was the matter of all the metal elements that needed treating and coating with Dulux Metalshield to protect them for the long haul. And let's not forget the scaffolding - we had to build a whole lot that went up to quite a height, and managing every single step was a juggling act to get that original character preserved but with a finish that’s clean and consistent.
This project is a great example of our approach to heritage painting, respecting the history but bringing in new ideas and systems that are reliable and built to last.
What Products Do We Use for Painting Heritage Buildings?
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. Each job is different, and the right product depends on the building’s age, substrate, and exposure. Here are some of the paints and systems we work with regularly:

Dulux Professional Envirowash & Heritage Colour Range
Best for: Heritage colour accuracy, sustainability, and general use on woodwork and rendered surfaces.
Technical reasons to choose:
- Heritage Colour Range is designed based on historic Australian palettes, making it easier to meet council or conservation requirements.
- Professional Envirowash System supports low-VOC painting and environmentally safer cleanup, ideal for jobs where sensitive landscaping or nearby waterways are a concern.
Use when colour accuracy and compliance are key, and when a modern, professional acrylic system is acceptable for the building material.

Porter’s Paints – Limewash, Interno, French Wash
Best for: Interior and exterior heritage buildings that need authentic finishes with a handcrafted appearance.
Technical reasons to choose:
- Limewash is breathable, alkali-resistant, and suitable for older porous substrates like lime render, sandstone, and old brick.
- Interno and French Wash offer soft, broken colour effects, often seen in older European-inspired or Federation-style interiors.
- Hand-applied and low sheen, great for soft light bounce and period-appropriate aesthetics.
Perfect for surfaces that need breathability or a traditional aged finish. Especially suitable for churches, cottages, and old mansions.

Solver Ultra Premium & Traditional Exterior Finishes
Best for: General exterior restoration of heritage homes, especially weatherboards and trim.
Technical reasons to choose:
- Solver’s Ultra Premium Exterior range is well known for UV resistance, adhesion to timber, and flexibility, important for weatherboards on older homes.
- Their Traditional Range includes gloss and satin finishes that replicate older paint styles (like oil-based enamel) with more modern, durable formulas.
- Good adhesion on older substrates, especially when surfaces have been previously painted.
Go with Solver when you want long-lasting exterior finishes and good colour retention in traditional hues, particularly for timber cladding and trims.

Keim Silicate Paints
Best for: Heritage masonry, sandstone, brick, render, concrete.
Technical reasons to choose:
- 100% mineral-based silicate paint, chemically bonds with mineral surfaces rather than sitting on top. This prevents peeling or flaking.
- Extremely breathable and water-repellent, a must for older masonry that needs to expel moisture.
- Has a lifespan of 15–25+ years, which is exceptional for exterior walls.
- Non-film forming, meaning the wall continues to behave like a traditional breathable surface.
Choose Keim for serious masonry preservation, especially on heritage-listed facades or when using traditional materials like lime render or stone.
