Heritage Exterior Painting in Glebe: Access, Repairs and a 10-Metre Facade
Painting the exterior of a heritage-listed terrace in Glebe involved much more than selecting a colour and applying a new coating. The property stood approximately 10 metres high, bordered a busy pedestrian footpath and had limited level ground for access equipment.
Before painting could begin, Painters Link had to resolve council approvals, public safety requirements, difficult access, deteriorated render, dried climbing vines and rotten timber window frames, all while maintaining the building’s existing heritage character.

Planning Access to the Building
The original access plan involved using a boom lift for painting. Because the equipment would need to operate from or affect the public road and footway, we investigated the City of Sydney’s requirements for a Mobile Hoisting Device Operating from a Road or Footway application.
This option would also have required a certified traffic control company and a compliant traffic guidance scheme.
During the planning stage, we found that the ground beside the property was not level enough for a standard boom lift. We also considered a boom lift with adjustable outriggers. However, once the equipment, council requirements, traffic control and associated management costs were included, the proposal was beyond the customer’s budget.
Rope-access painting was assessed and quoted as another option, but it was also too expensive for the homeowners.
After reviewing the available alternatives, we obtained the required City of Sydney approval for temporary works and assigned suitably trained workers holding the relevant High Risk Work licences. This allowed the project to proceed with a controlled work area and an access arrangement appropriate to the site.

Managing a Busy Glebe Footpath
The house is located in a high-traffic part of Glebe. Pedestrians passed directly beside the work area throughout the day, and people occasionally stood close to our warning signs and barriers.
A dedicated spotter and pedestrian guide remained in place while overhead work was underway. Their role was to:
- Keep pedestrians outside the active work zone
- Guide people safely past the property
- Monitor the barriers and warning signs
- Communicate with the painters working above
- Pause work whenever pedestrian safety could be affected
This was an essential part of the project rather than a temporary precaution.
In a busy inner-city location, site controls must remain effective even when pedestrians are distracted or attempt to walk close to the work area.
Working Within the Heritage Requirements
Because the terrace was heritage-listed, the existing colour scheme and visual finish needed to be retained. The project was therefore treated as a careful restoration rather than an opportunity to modernise the facade.
Dulux Antique White USA was used to preserve the established appearance of the property and remain consistent with its surrounding heritage character.
The heritage requirements also influenced our preparation methods. Aggressive high-pressure washing and mechanical removal could have damaged the older render and disturbed more of the existing coating than necessary. Instead, we used hand tools, controlled scraping and low-pressure washing.
This slower approach gave us greater control over the preparation process and helped protect the original building fabric.

Removing Dried Vines From the Facade
A large section of the approximately 10-metre-high wall was covered with dried climbing vines and plant residue. These could not simply be painted over, as the remaining material would prevent the new render and coating system from bonding correctly.
The dried vines were carefully scraped from the wall by hand. Remaining organic matter, loose paint and unstable material were then removed before the surface was cleaned at low pressure.
This was one of the most time-consuming parts of the preparation, but it was essential for achieving a stable and consistent finish.
Repairing the Rendered Walls
Once the loose material had been removed, the extent of the render deterioration became clearer. The wall contained cracks, damaged areas and an uneven surface that could not be properly corrected with paint alone.
Bagging was considered during the assessment, but the customer preferred a more substantial repair. We therefore patched the damaged substrate and applied Dunlop Trade Acrylic Render where required.
Granosite textured coating was then used to recreate the existing textured appearance and help the repaired areas blend with the surrounding façade.
The repair process included:
- Removing vines, loose paint and unstable render
- Cleaning the surface with a controlled low-pressure system
- Opening and preparing cracks and damaged areas
- Patching the underlying render
- Applying Dunlop Trade Acrylic
- Render where required
- Recreating the existing texture with Granosite
- Applying the specified exterior coating in Dulux Antique White USA

Restoring the Timber Windows
The timber window frames had also deteriorated, with sections of rotten timber requiring more than standard filling and repainting.
To complete the repairs properly, we removed the external metal window guards. The deteriorated timber was then cut out and replaced where required. Remaining defects were patched, sanded and prepared before the window coating system was applied.
The metal guards were refitted in their original positions, after the paint had dried and the windows had been inspected by Khan, our project manager.
Removing the guards added time to the project, but it allowed us to reach concealed areas and complete the timber repairs properly.
Protecting the Footpath, Garden and Drainage
Preparation work can create paint flakes, render particles, dust and wash-water runoff. On this project, it was particularly important to prevent waste from entering the street drainage system or the small garden beside the house.
We covered the surrounding ground with temporary floor protection before scraping, washing, rendering or painting began. The protective system helped contain loose material and allowed the work area to be cleaned progressively.
The protection was regularly checked and adjusted as the work moved across the façade. Waste was collected rather than washed towards the garden, gutter or stormwater drain.
The Finished Result
Despite the restricted access, uneven ground, heavy pedestrian traffic and condition of the existing façade, the exterior was repaired and repainted while retaining the terrace’s established heritage appearance.
The completed work included:
- Careful removal of dried climbing vines
- Hand scraping and low-pressure surface cleaning
- Render patching and acrylic render repairs
- Reinstatement of the existing textured finish
- Replacement of rotten timber sections
- Restoration and painting of the timber windows
- Removal and refitting of the metal window guards

- Continuous pedestrian and environmental protection
A Cooperative Project From Start to Finish
One of the most positive parts of this project was working with the homeowners. The property belonged to two friendly senior women who were patient and understanding while we worked through the access restrictions, council requirements and unexpected repairs.
Their cooperation helped us make practical decisions as the project progressed. Our team understood how important the home was to them, so we made every effort to minimise disruption and deliver a result that respected both the building and its owners.
