Project Background
Schools need a level of care and planning that's way beyond what goes on in your run-of-the-mill commercial painting job. These are places where kids go every day and there's a whole lot of responsibility that comes with that - keeping students, staff and visitors safe, all while trying to get on with the day's work.
Painters Link was brought in to shake up the painting and maintenance game at Danebank Anglican School by putting in place a structured program that would keep things ticking over while the painters got to work. High-traffic areas got a refresh, making them last longer and creating a better environment for learning.
But this wasn't just applying a new coat of paint. This was a chance to give the school a bit of a tune-up and make sure its assets are looking after themselves.
Key Challenges We Overcame
From the school's point of view, we had to deal with some pretty big challenges:
- Keeping students and staff safe at all times - no small ask
- Getting access to the building when school was in session
- Dealing with all the traffic through the corridors, stairwells and shared areas
- Making sure we were up to speed with all the school's safety and regulatory requirements
- Using paint and materials that are kind to the school's kids and staff
- Planning for the long haul and making sure the school can still get on with its day in spite of all the works
We sorted all this by coming up with a phased plan of works, putting together a set of safety procedures and working closely with the school to make sure we didn't cause any disruption to their day.
Scope of Painting Works
The completed scope of works included:
- Internal walls and ceilings in nominated common areas
- Replacement and repainting of selected ceiling tiles
- Skirting boards
- Doors and door frames
- Handrails
- Selected classrooms
- Specialist areas, including the art room bathroom
All works were delivered under a single coordinated scope to ensure consistency in finish, performance, and future maintenance.
Colour Strategy & Environmental Considerations
During the planning phase, the internal colour scheme got a relook. We were looking at how our colour choices would affect the environment and the students, not just how pretty they looked.
There were a few areas in the school that had these dark green doors and handrails. They were okay, but to be honest they sucked up all the light and made the corridors and stairwells feel really heavy and dark.
We ended up opting to swap them out for a nice white finish across the whole project area. And the reasons for that were:
- To make sure the corridors and stairwells were a lot brighter and more welcoming
- To bring some real brightness and positivity into the space
- We've always wanted a school that's a happy place where the kids really feel like they can learn without any sort of distraction. And by going with a lighter, more neutral colour scheme, we felt we could really help create that kind of atmosphere
Plus it makes a lot of sense from a maintenance point of view. A lighter finish means you can spot any wear and tear a mile off, and it's a lot easier to touch up or replace components if needed.

Preparation Methodology
In school environments, preparation quality directly affects both durability and safety. Painters Link followed a disciplined preparation process, including:
- Full protection of floors, fixtures, noticeboards, and fittings
- Cleaning of all surfaces to remove dust, grease, and contaminants
- Repair of cracks, impact damage, and surface defects
- Sanding to ensure uniform adhesion
- Application of appropriate primers and sealers
This approach ensured that final coatings would perform reliably under daily school use.
High-Level Access Strategy: Boom Lift Use in Hallway Ceilings
Several hallway and circulation areas at Danebank Anglican School feature high ceilings that cannot be safely accessed using ladders or mobile scaffolding without increasing risk or disruption.
To address this, Painters Link implemented a boom lift access strategy as part of the approved works. This approach was selected to ensure:
- Safe and stable access to elevated ceiling surfaces
- Consistent coating quality at height
- Reduced risk to students, staff, and contractors
- Faster completion compared to repetitive scaffold erection and dismantling

Paint Systems and Application
All coatings were selected specifically for educational settings:
Walls: Low-VOC low-sheen system for durability and glare control
Ceilings: Ceiling white designed to improve light distribution
Doors and handrails: Durable enamel system suitable for frequent contact

Safety, Compliance, and Quality Assurance
Throughout the project, Painters Link maintained strict compliance with school and regulatory requirements, including:
- Working With Children Check clearance for all personnel
- Site-specific safety planning and barricading
- Clear signage and controlled access to work zones
- Ongoing communication with school representatives
- Quality assurance was embedded into delivery through:
- Mid-project inspections
- Progressive defect rectification
- Final joint inspection prior to handover
This process reduced rework, improved transparency, and ensured outcomes met agreed standards.
Long-Term Value for Danebank Anglican School
This project shows just how much impact a well-thought out school painting project can have - it's about a whole lot more than just giving the place a fresh coat of paint.
Key long-term benefits are:
Extended repainting cycles - you won't need to touch it up as often
Reducing maintenance costs - so you can stash the savings for other school needs
Improving the air quality and the overall vibe for kids and staff
Better asset condition reports for the school board and facilities team
By integrating a repainting schedule into your overall maintenance strategy you can aim high and still keep your school running on a shoestring.
Conclusion
The Danebank Anglican School project is a prime example of Painters Link's approach to providing top notch school painting services - all about prioritising safety, durability, compliance and actually helping the school learn.
For principals, school boards and facilities managers this case study should make it clear how a planned out painting program can really help create great learning spaces and manage your school's assets while keeping the kids flowing in and out of class without any disruption.
